Croque Monsieur
Ingredients:
8 slices of thick white bread
4 slices of ham
1 1/2 cups grated Gruyère cheese
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese (for the Mornay sauce)
Salt and pepper to taste
A pinch of nutmeg
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions:
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F.
Prepare the Mornay Sauce:
In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to form a roux.
Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
Cook for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
Add 1/2 cup of grated Gruyère cheese, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth. Set aside.
Assemble the Sandwiches:
Lay 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet.
Spread a thin layer of Mornay sauce on each slice.
Add a slice of ham and a generous amount of grated Gruyère cheese on top of the Mornay sauce.
Place the remaining bread slices on top to form sandwiches.
Top the Sandwiches:
Spread another layer of Mornay sauce on the top slice of each sandwich.
Sprinkle with the remaining Gruyère cheese and grated Parmesan cheese.
Bake: Bake the sandwiches in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the tops are golden brown.
Serve: Serve hot and enjoy your delicious Croque Monsieur with Mornay sauce!
