Croque Monsieur

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of thick white bread

  • 4 slices of ham

  • 1 1/2 cups grated Gruyère cheese

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese (for the Mornay sauce)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • A pinch of nutmeg

  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F.

  2. Prepare the Mornay Sauce:

    • In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

    • Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to form a roux.

    • Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.

    • Cook for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.

    • Add 1/2 cup of grated Gruyère cheese, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth. Set aside.

  3. Assemble the Sandwiches:

    • Lay 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet.

    • Spread a thin layer of Mornay sauce on each slice.

    • Add a slice of ham and a generous amount of grated Gruyère cheese on top of the Mornay sauce.

    • Place the remaining bread slices on top to form sandwiches.

  4. Top the Sandwiches:

    • Spread another layer of Mornay sauce on the top slice of each sandwich.

    • Sprinkle with the remaining Gruyère cheese and grated Parmesan cheese.

  5. Bake: Bake the sandwiches in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the tops are golden brown.

  6. Serve: Serve hot and enjoy your delicious Croque Monsieur with Mornay sauce!
