Asian Crispy Beef Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Beef:

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain

  • 1/4 cup cornstarch

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/4 cup neutral oil (like vegetable or peanut oil)

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce

  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce

  • 1 tbsp honey or brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1-inch ginger, grated

  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

  • 1 tbsp water

  • 1 tsp cornstarch (for thickening)

Garnishes (Optional):

  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced

  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

  • 1 red chili, thinly sliced (for extra heat)

Instructions:

1. Prep the Beef:

  • Slice the beef thinly against the grain for tenderness.

  • In a bowl, toss beef with cornstarch, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Let it sit for 5 minutes while you prepare the sauce.

2. Make the Sauce:

  • In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes.

  • In a separate small bowl, mix 1 tbsp water with 1 tsp cornstarch to create a slurry.

3. Fry the Beef:

  • Heat oil in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat.

  • Shake off excess cornstarch from beef slices and fry in a single layer (in batches if necessary) for 2-3 minutes per side until crispy.

  • Remove beef from the pan and drain on a paper towel.

4. Combine & Toss:

  • Remove excess oil, leaving about 1 tbsp in the pan.

  • Pour in the sauce and bring to a simmer. Add the cornstarch slurry and stir until thickened.

  • Toss the crispy beef back into the sauce, coating evenly.

5. Serve & Garnish:

  • Plate the crispy beef over rice or in lettuce wraps.

  • Sprinkle with green onions, sesame seeds, and red chili if desired.
